The Maltese archipelago is made up of the three main islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. It also includes the smaller, uninhabited islands of Cominotto, Filfla, St. Paul's Islands and Fungus Rock. The Maltese islands are located in the Mediterranean, 81 km south of the Sicilian Coast. Due to its location in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta has always been inhabited and fought for over the centuries. The capital Valletta, with the temple of Ggantija and the Hypogeum Ħal-Saflieni has been declared a World Heritage Site. Malta's coastline measures a length of 140 km and is extremely varied. In the north and south there are sharp, rocky coasts and high cliffs. In contrast, along the east and northeastern coasts there are sandy beaches and wide bays such as: Mellieha Bay, St. Paul's Bay, Marsaxlokk Bay, Marsamxett Harbour and Grand Harbour. The most popular starting point for Yachtcharter Malta is Msida. Climate & Weather in Malta Malta's climate is subtropical. The weather is warm and dry for most of the year and the winters are short, mild and wet. Summers are long, sunny and warm but not excessively hot. In summer, the average temperature is 27 °C and the sun shines for 12 hours a day. In winter the average temperature is 14 °C. The sailing season in Malta runs from April to October, and May, June, September and October are the best months in which to sail. During this time the temperatures are pleasant and the winds are stable. The prevailing winds in the Maltese archipelago are the Mistral and Sirocco. They blow from the north at 3 to 5 Bft. Some small storms occur in the winter months when winds can reach up to 10 Bft and last for several days.
